Beating ADHD Procrastination: How to Get Started with Photo Organizing Now

Finding Purpose in the Process

On the podcast episode from April 7th, I had the pleasure of interviewing Krista K, a professional organizer with a zig-zagging brain, who built an inspiring business in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. Krista helps people salvage what remains of their precious memories when they have very little left.

Our conversation got me deeply reflecting on the power and importance of proactive organizing—especially for those of us with ADHD. I recently read an article that offered fascinating insight into ADHD and procrastination. It explained that when we decide to put something off, our brain treats it similarly to completing a task, providing that little dopamine hit we crave. Essentially, we've addressed the issue by consciously deciding not to do it right now.

So, if we're continually procrastinating around addressing physical clutter, photo clutter, or digital clutter, what can finally motivate us to take meaningful action? It truly comes back to identifying and addressing barriers, a point I’ve emphasized countless times.

Ask yourself: What's preventing me from taking action right now?

For me—and many of my clients—photo organizing feels overwhelming. There's a lot to sort through, it's difficult knowing where to begin, and the entire project seems daunting. Yet, I also recognize that I don't want to wait for a catastrophic event like Hurricane Ian, floods in North Carolina, or fires in Southern California to finally find the momentum to preserve these precious memories.

Tiny Tasks, Big Impact

Since posting Krista's episode, I've taken small, meaningful steps toward tackling my own photo clutter. I started by discussing photo organizing with my clients, encouraging them to think about their own collections. Next, I categorized a few of my physical photos. Then, I decided to invest in Krista's course and watched the first video (side note: I love watching educational content sped up to match my brain’s pace!).

While the entire photo project still feels intimidating, I’m giving myself credit for these small, proactive actions, just as I’ve successfully done with physical clutter in my home.
