The Magical Tool That Will Finally Cure My ADHD Brain (…Right?)

Why That “Perfect Tool” Didn’t Stick

Whew. The number of times I’ve fallen for that kind of messaging… I’ve lost count.

Don’t get me wrong, there are so many amazing humans creating brilliant tools, templates, apps, programs, and systems that genuinely can help. (Heck, I’ve created a few myself!)

But here’s the thing: when I buy a new tool, it doesn’t magically fix everything overnight. And that used to make me feel like I was the problem.


The YNAB Story: Trying Again, Differently

Let me tell you a story.

A few years ago, I signed up for YNAB (a budgeting software). I was so excited. I connected all my accounts, categorized every transaction, and set up all the things. I did exactly what I thought I was supposed to do… and then I gave up.

It felt confusing. Too many moving parts. I got overwhelmed and annoyed, and I assumed I just wasn’t the kind of person who could use something like that. Sound familiar?

But about a year later, I tried again. This time, I did it differently:


Instead of diving in full speed, I watched their videos.

I learned their philosophy on money.

I didn’t connect all my accounts.

I started simple. One account. Manual tracking only.

That tiny start made all the difference. Once I felt more confident, I added in automation. I expanded a little more. I kept learning, adjusting, and growing. Now?

It’s a tool I genuinely don’t want to live without.


What Actually Makes a Tool Work for ADHD Brains

Here’s what I’ve realized: In the past, I’ve been good at things right away, especially when the instructions are clear and the rules make sense. But when something doesn’t click immediately, my ADHD brain checks out. Fast.

But most tools worth using… aren’t instant. They require a learning curve. They need space to grow into your life, not take it over.


So if a tool hasn’t worked for you right away, it doesn’t mean you’re broken. 

You just might need:

  • Someone to walk with you through it

  • A smaller starting point

  • A version that fits into how you already live

This month in the community we’re talking about tools we have but never use. 

You know the ones:

  • That app that tells you when to clean (that you turned off after a week)

  • The wall calendar that was supposed to sync the whole family

  • The beautiful planner that worked for four days and now lives in a drawer

We’re digging into why those tools didn’t work and what we can do differently next time.

Because it's not about finding the magical tool. It’s about finding the right fit, and letting it grow with you.
